  Important Update to IBEW Local 37 members concerning news reports speculating that NB Power may be sold to Hydro Quebec
Posted October 23 2009

Dear Brothers and Sisters:

The CBC and Telegraph Journal have recently run stories concerning speculation that all or part of NB Power may be sold to Hydro Quebec. Over the past week I have also heard an increasing number of credible rumours that discussions along those lines may be occurring.

I want to stress that nothing has been confirmed at this time, and we need to get accurate information. In order to do that, and as initial steps to protect the interests of Local 37 members, I've taken several actions:

  • I've hand delivered a letter to the Premier's office and spoken with his Executive Assistant. In the letter, I've requested a meeting as soon as possible in order to get information and have input. I've also explained that I have four initial concerns if the sale of any part of NB Power is being considered. Specifically, if a sale is being contemplated, I want to know what provisions have been made for the:
    • continuation of employment for current employees;
    • protection of employees' pensions and other benefits;
    • continuation of bargained rights (i.e. the provisions of the current collective agreements), and;
    • continuation of bargaining rights (i.e. IBEW Local 37 as bargaining agent for these workers)

I've since been contacted by the Premier's Office and a meeting will be scheduled for some time next week. I've also arranged a meeting with Energy Minister Jack Keir.

  • I've contacted a prominent law firm and discussed ramifications of a potential sale with one of their experts. I've got them on stand-by in case they are needed.
  • I've met with NB Power CEO David Hay and expressed the concerns I have over a potential sale. He told me that he was not able to confirm any of the rumours I was hearing, since if there were any discussions about a sale, it would be at a government level and he could not comment. He did assure me that whenever a significant decision is made concerning NB Power, considering the impact on employees is part of his job.
  • I've discussed the situation with IBEW International Vice President Phil Fleming. If there is anything to these rumours we will want to make contact with Hydro Quebec and International Representative Luc Couture (based in Quebec) could be of great assistance.
  • I've had a conference call with members of the Executive Board to ensure they are fully briefed on the speculation and on the above actions I've taken. I will continue to keep them fully informed as matters progress

As I find out more and developments occur, I will keep all of you informed, through e-mails, communication with the Local 37 Executive Board and via this website.

Although at this point we are just dealing with rumours and speculation, I want all of you to know that we put the interests of our members first, and we will continue to do so as this situation develops.

Fraternally,

Ross Galbraith, Business Manager IBEW 37
