  Latest update for Local 37 members re: NB Power / Hydro Quebec speculation (Tuesday Oct. 27)
Posted October 27 2009

Dear Brothers and Sisters:

I want to take this opportunity to bring you up to speed on the recent speculation surrounding the possible purchase of NB Power by Hydro Quebec. Although nothing has been confirmed at this time, I have a strong sense that something may indeed be happening and that some significant decisions may have already been made.

I'm sure all of you are full of questions, fear, and uncertainty - much of which is based on the endless rumours and speculation. Please know that my number one concern is focused on protecting the interests of you and your families. And this starts with ensuring that everyone is equipped with the most accurate information available.

To this, I feel that it's important for you to know I'm continuing to take steps to gather and process as much factual information as possible, while providing a voice for the dedicated members of Local 37 employed with NB Power.

You know that I have sent a letter to the Premier requesting a meeting and it looks like that will happen this week. At the meeting I'll reinforce our need to know what provisions will be made for our four initial concerns:

  • continuation of employment for current employees;
  • protection of employees' pensions and other benefits;
  • continuation of bargained rights (i.e. the provisions of the current collective agreements)
  • continuation of bargaining rights (i.e. IBEW Local 37 as bargaining agent for these workers)
I've met with Energy Minister Jack Keir. He wouldn't confirm anything about the rumours, except that they are in discussions with Hydro Quebec and that they're looking at different ways they can work together. He said that if they decide to do anything it would need to be seen as a win/win/win for the province, the IBEW and his government. I expressed that although it's good to hear him say that, our preferred option is the status quo - NB Power provides good service at a reasonable cost to New Brunswickers and it is a vital provincial resource.

In addition, I've spoken again with IBEW International Vice President Phil Fleming and he has made it very clear that we have the full support of the International Office.

I want all of you to know that we put the interests of our members first, and we'll continue to do so as this situation develops. As I find out more, and as developments occur, I will keep all of you informed, through e-mails, communication with the Local 37 Executive Board, Shop Stewards, and via this website. Please make sure you check the website often.

Fraternally,

Ross Galbraith
